The account ‘Pocket Monsters Illustrated’ looks for artists to take part in a project illustrating Pokémon characters, each generation at a time. After finding this account during their run of the 1st generation I knew I had to get in there for the 2nd generation.
Upon artist selection I was lucky enough to get a Pokémon that I loved from my times playing the games as a kid. From there I set about creating a unique design with my style of illustration for the Pokémon Gligar.
The style of my illustrations has definitely evolved over the years and I often take inspiration from traditional tattoos and flash sheets. Having always liked the idea of designing my own flash sheet, I took this as the opportunity to do so. Doing this, it meant I was able to create surrounding designs relating the character and Pokémon in general.
It’s nice to look back on this project, thinking about certain things I’d possibly change with my style continually evolving, but I will definitely take forward what I’ve learned when I create other flash sheets like this.
